Losing Weight, the Healthy Way

Being overweight, mostly obese, is not something to take lightly. Studies show that obesity is a serious health challenge, that continues to impact more and more of the population with each year. In December of 2020, the Centers for Disease Control Prevention (CDC), released a study from 2017-2018, stated the age-adjusted prevalence of obesity in adults was 42.4%. Another study from 2019, showed about 18.5% of children ages 2 to 19, living in the United States, were obese. In a Harvard study from 2020, it had referenced an average of one out of every three adults is obese, which is about 36% of the population in the United States alone.

What does it mean to be obese? 

To be diagnosed as obese, the body mass index (BMI), waist circumference measurements, and other symptoms are measured. The BMI factors in the height, body weight, gender, and age. Normally, a BMI of 30 or higher, and a waist measurement of over 35-40 inches, often indicates obesity. Obesity is considered a medical condition, which is a result of the excess amount of body fat. Having too much body fat can increase the risk for health problems and contributes to problems of its own.

What causes obesity? 

The most common and well accepted reasons linked to obesity is due to reduced physical activity and fast food. But there is evidence the main causes of obesity is largely circumstantial. To understand more about the causes of obesity, read my article, “10 Possible Causes of the Obesity Epidemic.” Most causes can be reduced and even eliminated. Regardless, obesity is a serious issue that shouldn’t be ignored. 

Can it be prevented? 

One way to prevent this scenario is to make people aware of the risks of being overweight or obese.  

Here are some diseases that you are putting yourself in risk of if you are carrying a lot of extra pounds:  

  • heart disease 
  • stroke  
  • diabetes 
  • cancer 
  • arthritis 
  • hypertension 

Losing weight helps to prevent and control these diseases.  

The quick weight loss methods which have spread like fire these days do not provide lasting results. Often, dieting methods which involve dietary drinks, foods and supplements or pills do not work. If they do, the results are just temporary.  

It is better to rely on a healthy weight loss option which will provide lifetime results. You must set realistic goals and not expect to lose a lot of pounds in a short span of time.   

Here are some tips on how you can lose those unwanted pounds the healthy way: 

1.   Do not starve yourself.  

The key to a healthier way of losing weight is: Do not diet.  

You may seem happy and feel that you are losing those unwanted flabs on your belly and thighs by skipping meals. But remember that this would not last long. Your body cannot tolerate having insufficient food to fuel the energy that you use up every day.  

If you get used to skipping one or two meals a day, your stored calories will be used up instead of the energy that should have been provided by your meals. So, if you just eat one huge sandwich in one day, it will end up straight to your problem area (i.e. highs, buttocks, hips).  

2.  Start your day right.  

As the say, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”. Have a healthy meal in the morning to jump-start your metabolism.  

Your food intake after you wake up will be used to burn fat all day long. 

3.  Eat small, healthy meals frequently.  

Five small-serving snacks per day is better than three hearty meals. Eating more frequently, and in small servings, can prevent overeating. This will also increase your metabolism and make calories burn faster.  

4.  Decide on how much weight you want to lose.  

Keep your goals realistic. In the long run, it is virtually impossible for you to lose 40 pounds in 2 weeks. Have a mindset that you want to eat healthy to stay healthy for the rest of your life.  

Once you have decided on a weight loss plan or program, stick to it and make sure that you follow your own set of dieting rules.   

5.  Drink lots of water.  

Your body needs enough water to burn fat and keep your cells hydrated and healthy.  

6.  Avoid too much sugar.  

Plan your meals around lots of fruits and vegetables, some bread, rice or pasta for that carbo fix that you need, plus lean meat and protein rich foods. Sweets, sodas and pastries should be once-in-a-while indulgences only. 

7.  Watch your fat intake.  

Fat is not the culprit to being overweight. You need this to keep your weight at the proper level.  

There is such a thing as healthy fats. Olive, peanuts and canola oil have them. Tuna, salmon and mackerel have omega-3 fats which is good for the heart.   

8.  Exercise.  

Leave your car if you are only going a few blocks from home, take the stairs instead of the elevator, jog, cycle or skate. Use these activities and other home chores if you are too lazy to go to the gym and take exercise classes. Make sure that you do this regularly and you will not even notice that you are already shedding pounds with these mundane activities.  

It does not matter how much weight you plan or need to lose. What is important is that you set realistic goals for yourself.  

Go slow. If you have already lost 5 or 6 pounds, give yourself a break then try to lose the next 5 pounds.  

Eat healthy, drink lots of water, have enough sleep and exercise. This will give you a higher chance of losing weight and improving your health, which would result in a new, healthier you.

7 Reasons to Grow Your Own Organic Vegetable Garden

During the last decades there has been a change towards mechanization and homogenization of farming, which uses pesticides, additives, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers and mass-production techniques. All this is clearly affecting mankind’s health, and new diseases are spreading rapidly amongst humans and animals (bird’s flu being the most recent one).

The World Health Organization produces reports to show how the use of chemicals and other products on food, coupled with the manufacturing processes involved, are a threat to our health.

If you have space for a few pots or even a small piece of land, it is a wise decision to grow your own organic vegetable garden. Today I’m presenting you with seven reasons for doing this:

In the end, eating organic products only means that we do not add anything else to them than they would naturally have. As you can guess, additives, fertilizers, pesticides or hormones are not components of naturally grown food. To better care for your health, grow your own organic vegetables -and a few pots is all you need.

The Lazy Man’s Way to Reduce Bad Cholesterol

a. The Myth of Good and Bad Cholesterol

There are actually two types of cholesterol, which is not a known fact for people who misconstrue it as something bad. HDL is the name of the good cholesterol, while the bad one is called LDL. A bloodstream with too much LDL will result in plaques in the arteries. Over time, blood will have a difficult time travelling your arteries because the opening becomes narrow thanks to the amount of bad cholesterol in it. Dietary cholesterol is not the culprit for your having high cholesterol in the blood. Rather, it is copious amounts of saturated fat along with Tran’s fat that is to blame for the tightening of the artery. To keep your cholesterol on the low level, you should eat plenty of unsaturated fats and fibrous foods, as well as exercise often.
b. Cholesterol Numbers and What They Mean

On an average, adults will usually need to have cholesterol checks every five years. Each time you get a cholesterol check it will yield four results – total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and Triglycerides. You will probably need more exercise and dietary change if you go above or below the healthy levels.

Total Cholesterol – less than 200 mg/dL (5.2 mmol/L)
LDL Cholesterol – less than 100 mg/dL (2.6 mmol/L)
HDL Cholesterol – greater than 40 mg/dL (1.0 mmol/L)
Triglycerides – less than 150 mg/dL (1.7 mmol/L)

c. Can Vitamin E Protect Your Heart?

Vegetable oils, nuts and leafy vegetables are good sources of Vitamin E. Vitamin E is not proven to stop you from getting a stroke, but it can lessen your heart disease risk level.

d. Five Great Foods to Lower Your Cholesterol

1. Oatmeal and Oat Bran: These contain a high amount of soluble fiber, which can lower LDL.

2. Fish: Fish is a great source of omega 3 fatty acids, which lowers LDL and raises HDL.

3. Nuts: Not only are nuts high in fiber, but they contain the healthy fats you need to keep LDL in check.

4. Plant Sterols: This is found in foods like margarine, salad dressing, orange juice, and functional cookies. 2 grams per day will lower your LDL by 10-15%.

5. Soy: This popular meat replacement can lower LDL by up to 3%.

Coconut Oil Promotes Weight Loss

Learn the facts about Coconut Oil and Weight Loss

MYTH: The saturated fat in coconut oil is bad for you

FACT: Surprisingly enough coconut oil, although being a saturated fat can actually make you lose weight.

This is due directly to the to the short and Medium-Chain Fatty Acids (also here referred as MCT*) that coconut oil is rich in.

Dr. Bruce Fife, N.D. makes a reference to a recent study published in the Journal of Nutrition in which researchers reviewed all the published studies to date on *Medium-Chain Triglycerides – MCT (also known as *Medium-Chain Fatty Acids) and weight management. Dr Fife, wrote that such studies demonstrated that diets containing MCT resulted in an “increase in energy, a rise in metabolism, increase burning of calories, decrease in food consumption, lower body fat mass, and reduce body weight. Because of these effects, the authors of this study recommend using oils containing MCT, such as coconut oil, as a means to lose excess body fat, control weight, and even treat obesity.”.

Coconut oil also contains fewer calories than other oils; it’s easier to digest and helps prevent bacterial, viral and fungal infections (including yeast). It will keep your skin soft and smooth, will act as a protective antioxidant, and is more nutritious than other oils. Above all, it will increase your body’s metabolism making it possible to burn more energy and consequently help you in losing weight. Its MCT’s get processed directly in the liver converting this fat into immediately available energy and also improving the absorption of other nutrients.

So what is the real difference between fats contained in coconut oil and other types of fats? Most fats in our diets are made of molecules known as Long-Chain Triglycerides (LCT). These are larger in size than the Medium-Chain Triglycerides (MCT). This difference between fats is of great significance because our bodies process these fats differently. While our bodies transform into readily available energy the MCT’s contained in coconut oil, when it comes to the Long-Chain Triglycerides (LCT), types of fats that are present in lard, soy, corn, canola oil, etc., it will keep it stored as fat, because our bodies can not break them down. So, even though coconut oil is made up of around 85% of saturated fat, this fat is constituted of Medium-Chain Fatty Acids, which means that your body uses them as energy and will not be stored in your body.

What makes coconut oil so special is that one of its main MCT’s is Lauric Acid, this MCT is considered as being of major importance. Lauric acid is also found in breast milk, and infants convert it into monolarin, which protects them from infections. So we might say that, the next best thing to mother’s milk is coconut oil. Lauric Acid is especially beneficial for its anti-viral, antibacterial, antimicrobial, and capable of destroying lipid-coated viruses, such as herpes and influenza. The Lauric acid present in coconut oil has a long shelf life, is nontoxic and safe to handle.

Swiss Chard – Super Green Nutrition!

As most of you know, dark leafy greens are considered Mother Nature’s Super Food. There are a large variety of these wonderful nutrient-dense greens to try. Swiss Chard is one of those super greens.

Swiss Chard is a tall leafy green vegetable with a thick stalk that crunches when you eat it. The stalks can be found in a variety of colors, such as white, red or yellow – white stalks are more desirable as they are more tender. The leaves are wide and fan-like, and dark green in color. Chard has a similar taste profile as spinach and beet greens. It’s salty yet slightly bitter. Both the stalk and the leaves are edible. Although it’s more common to eat cooked chard, raw chard is just as delicious and actually much healthier for you. Raw chard can be tossed in a salad, used to make wraps or roll-ups, good in smoothies, and great for juicing!

Swiss Chard is known for its health benefits too. Chard has a combination of phytonutrients plus fiber, and is effective in preventing digestive tract diseases such as cancer. Chard also has an effect on kidneys, by reducing serum urea and creatinine levels, which is helpful for those who suffer with diabetes.

Swiss Chard is also one of the most vitamin and mineral rich greens you can eat. Chard is an excellent source of vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C, magnesium, manganese, potassium, iron, vitamin E, and of course, dietary fiber. “No need for supplementation here! Eat lots of Swiss Chard!” In addition, Chard is also a great source of calcium, copper, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, folate, protein, phosphorus, niacin, and zinc.

Organic is always best too! If the leaves are wilting, then don’t bother with it – the Chard is done and isn’t fresh. Don’t wash it until you are ready to prepare and eat it. This will slow down the wilting process, and keep it fresh and alive.

“Why Raw-Foodist Have Problems With Their Teeth”

“How to avoid dental decay, gum disease and erosion for good”

To anyone involved in the raw-food and vegan movement or to anyone who cares about their health, please pass along this letter to as many people as possible.

Research and practical experience has demonstrated that raw-foodists get more problems with their teeth than the average American. This is a very unfortunate situation, since the dental health of Americans is already very bad.

One of the few scientific studies done in Germany on the health of raw-foodists showed that they get more cavities and more dental erosion than the rest of the population. This has been observed by nearly every single raw-food leader and author I have talked to, which have seen that the dental health of raw-foodists is indeed, very bad.

I am sharing this information with you because this issue is very dear to me. Due to the misinformation that I have received through reading raw-food books and listening to bad advice from many leaders in the raw-food and natural hygiene movement, and also due to my own ignorance, my dental health has suffered tremendously. Before becoming a raw-foodist, at the age of 20, and with no special care in my diet or dental hygiene, I had a few fillings only. After 4 years on a raw or mostly raw vegan diet, I got 19 cavities. Even then, with renewed efforts in order to reverse the situation, the decay pursued its course and I got other cavities.

This unfortunate situation led me to find the truth and lies about dental decay and gum disease and this is why I am sharing this information with you today.

By carefully following the advice below I have been able to reverse the situation and even re-enamelize some of my teeth.

Understand this: Only one thing can cause tooth decay, erosion and gum disease: acidity. The acidity can come from the foods you eat, or be produced by acid producing bacteria that live in the mouth. These bacteria live of sugar and decomposed food particles. If the teeth are clean, if acidity is removed from the teeth promptly, if sugar is not allowed to remain in the mouth for very long and if enough minerals are present in the diet to build strong, decay-resistant teeth, you will avoid erosion and never have problems with your teeth and gums ever again.

The reasons why raw-foodists have problems with their teeth are the following:

  1. After eating, the PH in the mouth drops to a more acid state. It takes 1-2 hours for it to go up. If you are snacking often, like most raw-foodists are, the PH in the mouth will stay acid. This is a perfect environment for bacteria to do their work and produce even more acids that will create tooth decay. But this will not occur if the following factors are not present.
  2. Raw foodists eat too much dried fruit and too many dehydrated foods. Dried fruit and dehydrated foods encourage tooth decay and gum disease. Dried fruit and dehydrated foods stick to the teeth and provide PERFECT nourishment for the acid-producing bacteria that cause tooth decay and gum disease. This includes all dried fruit, fruit bars, trail mixes, dehydrated crackers, raw “burgers,” as well as nuts and seeds (although nuts and seeds do not have a negative impact on the teeth if they are eaten in moderation. Soaking them in advance is better).
  3. Raw-foodists eat too many acid foods. Acid foods have a negative impact on the teeth. Those include lemon juice, fruit juice, citrus fruit, unripe fruit, vinegar and other acid foods.
  4. Constant contact with sugary foods encourages tooth decay and gum disease. If your teeth are in constant contact with sugar, even the natural sugars in the form of coconut water, honey, dried fruit, fruit juice or other sugary foods — tooth decay will occur. It is not okay to sip coconut water all day long, drink fruit juices, and snack often on sugary foods.
  5. Raw diets can be deficient in many important alkaline minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, that are necessary to build strong enamel. Sufficient levels of vitamin D and phosphorus are also necessary to build strong teeth. Those nutrients can be obtained in a balanced diet.

If the following measures are taken, dental decay and gum disease can be prevented and teeth can be healed up to their potential. Realize that this is the very minimum you can do to insure healthy teeth for life.

1.     Rinse your mouth with water during and after eating, especially when eating fruit and acid foods. Rinsing your mouth with water during and after meals will help prevent tooth decay. Water and other neutral liquid wash out acidity. Whole fresh fruit will have no negative impact on the teeth if the acids are removed promptly from the teeth by sipping water as you eat and rinsing your mouth with water after you’re done eating. Whenever you eat fruit, rinse your mouth with water immediately after the meal. And as you are eating your fruit, sip on some water too. An even better idea would be to eat celery after every fruit meal.

2. After eating certain high-sugar fruits that tend to leave residues on the teeth, you should floss and brush your teeth (just water and a brush is fine).

Those sweet fruits are: bananas, dates, really ripe figs, persimmons, mangoes, cherimoyas, durian, jackfruit, sapodilla, sugar apple, sweet sapote, mammey, etc. You can also eat greens after a meal of such fruits, but brushing your teeth is a good idea.

After eating other types of juicy fruits, it is not necessary to brush your teeth, but it is still a good idea to finish that meal with greens (such as lettuce and celery), and/or swich water in your mouth (you can also use water mixed with some Celtic sea salt, to restore alkalinity in the mouth environment).

Those juicy fruits include all the following and more: citrus fruits, apples, grapes, kiwis, pineapple, berries, melons, papaya, pears, peaches, plums, litchi, etc.

3.     Avoid dried fruits and dried foods. Dried fruit and dehydrated foods are NOT raw foods and are not health foods. Replacing the oven with a dehydrator is not a good move. Eat fresh foods, not dried foods. However, if you happen to eat some dried fruit or dehydrated foods, eat an apple or some celery after, and brush your teeth as soon as possible.

4.     You should try brushing your teeth with bar soap. According to Dr. Gerald Judd, Ph.D: “Re-enamelization of the teeth occurs when they are clean. All toothpastes make a barrier of glycerine on the teeth which would require 20 rinses to get it off. A good solution for clean teeth, which I have used for 5 years, is bar soap. Wet the brush, swipe the bar two or three times with it, then brush the teeth thoroughly and the gums gently. Rinse with water three or four times. All oils are washed off the teeth and the gums are disinfected. The bacteria are killed by the soap. The teeth are then ready for re-enamelization with calcium and phosphate in the diet.” You can use any regular bar soaps. Find one that you like. It takes some time getting used to it — but you teeth will never feel so clean.

5.     Avoid constant contact with sugar. It is okay to eat a lot of fruit, but have it all in a few meals, rather than snacking on it throughout the day. Also avoid sipping on fruit juice, coconut water, etc.

6.     Insure proper nutrition. In order to build strong, decay-resistant teeth, certain important minerals must be present in the diet. Particularly important are calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D.

7.     Remove food particles. It is not necessary to floss, but food particles that get caught in-between the teeth and along the gum line must be removed. You can use dental floss or learn to use a tooth pick. It is important to do this once or twice a day.

8.     Research shows that it’s more important HOW WELL we brush rather than HOW OFTEN we brush. A good brushing with a soft brush takes 2-3 minutes. Same for flossing. Reach every corner of your teeth and do a thorough job. Two such thorough brushings followed or preceded by flossing per day is enough.

    Had this simple information been presented to me, I would have saved $4000 in dental work and avoided the trauma of dealing with dental problems.
